RE: Mastering/cutting 1970s DGG Bruckner Karajan

Thank you for sharing.

It is a lot of food for thought (for me), given that I am deep in a 'pure analog' fetishization stage of my audiophile hobby. Though primarily a 'rock n' roll guy', I have found myself more and more in the Classical music world during the last 3-5 years. Enjoying the music (not all of it!), but also really enjoying the somewhat more pure approach to recording, mixing, and mastering of the genre as well. I know 'pure' is perhaps an inelegant word to use in describing what I am looking to listen to (and collect), but at the moment, it is the most appropriate word I can think of using.

Anyway, short of modern direct-to-disc recordings of acoustic music that has gone to get lengths to use no additional artificial processing (i.e. - echo, delay, etc) whatsoever, there are not that many recordings out there past the 1960s that represent such a commitment. Also, take into account the advances in cutter-head technology during the late 1960s, it leads to another fork in the road regarding whether a record has really good high-frequencies.

Anyway, it can all sound quite academic pretty quickly. Worse, it can quickly devolve into silly 'how many angels can dance on the head of a pin' types of discussions as well. I tend to shy away from both. For me, it is about enjoying the music, in all forms, and in all states.

...yet, privately, I still aspire to challenge my system with these 'purist' endeavors. At times, checking-in on what sounds the 'most real' is still fun to do. Knowing what has been 'artificially inserted' (even if it is in accordance with the musician's or conductor's wishes) into recordings is also helpful for me to take into account during evaluation(s) of what kind of a job my system is doing.
