She asked how much it would cost. I said I could get one "for a thousand dollars." She seemed very reluctant, but said "okay." Later adding "$4000 seems like a lot of money." When I cleared it up that I said, "for a thousand," she was relieved. Even more so when Kef put their discontinued Kube 12b on sale for $600.
If you want to give your wife some perspective, take her into a stereo shop with you. I went to listen to a $1700 NuPrime amp. The dealer swapped it out for a $55,000 Soulution driving some similarly priced Magicos. She couldn't tell the difference, and I barely could. Then I told her the Nordost cables connecting that system costs more than my entire setup, she realized a lot of guys are even crazier than I am.
Maybe that's why $4000 for a subwoofer didn't freak her out.
