My current record collection was started in 1978 and had a stereo record player, a FM/AM radio and a portable cassette record in 1970 when I was 12. Still buy mostly vinyl (I 1 who stuck straight through with it) but many CDs too. I enjoy the physical collector aspect of it.
Just added a streamer to the audio system and have maintained a digital music library of all physical media for more than a decade. I also collect free lossless concert downloads which reside in the digital music library.
This is like a golden era of hifi for me. I might not hold onto physical media, CDP or vinyl system beyond some point down the road. The vinyl collection is around 2000 LP and there's about 400 CDs. Our home is 2100 sq. ft. and storing both the records and the CDs takes space and creates a recurring cleaning up to prevent dust accumulation. Using physical media is kind of a buzz kill compared the controlling playback through interfaces on my cell phone or personal computer.
As to downsizing I'm pretty much enamored with the listening experience possible with this system and have no intention of losing that result as it was very difficult to come up with in the first place. But if need be I could take the hard drive, streamer with my DAC which has a head phone amp and some headphones into a the home of a family member, old folks home, hospital or hospice if life comes off the rails.
