You can upgrade the stylus to the VMN60 to put an SLC on the 540 body. That is $529 at lpgear.
The 700 series is the same as the 500 series except for the aluminium mounting plate which adds mass so you won't gain anything by buying a 740ML for example. For the SL1200 arm the 500 series body mass is actually a better match.
The Shibata will sound "different" and perhaps slightly more rounded and less thin sounding on vocals, but the ML is vastly superior on hot cuts especially on inner grooves. The SLC (VMN60) is the jump to make if you want a different voicing to what you currently have.
The 2M Bronze is NOT an upgrade. It is just different and certainly technically less competent than the AT for tracking ability. So my recommendation is to go for the VMN60 stylus.
