No surprise there: Morgan Jones in 'Valve Amplifiers' (p. 206) found that the 12AU7 has 4.5 times the second harmonic distortion and 28 times the nasty third harmonic distortion compared to a 6SN7. Designers only use the 12AU7 because consumers demand it.
