In Reply to: KEF uses activated Carbon in some of their models..... posted by kenster on May 8, 2007 at 18:12:58:
That was a fascinating read indeed. Thanks for posting that. I wonder how charcoal would be versus activated carbon. In fireworks, charcoal is usually greatly preferred over activated carbon because the surface area is greater and thus it burns better (all other things equal). The best charcoal of all (for fireworks) is made from soft, non-resinous wood like black willow, balsa, and paulownia. If anyone is in a position to shed light on the relative differences between charcoal and activated carbon in speaker boxes, please let me know.By the way, I do know that if I was a manufacturer, activated carbon would be my choice regardless, due to the much better consistency from batch to batch and the ease of handling. Charcoal can be messier than activated carbon.
Another good reason to use either activated carbon or charcoal inside a speaker box might be the absorbtion of off-gassed compounds from the speakers and enclosures. If there is anything being off-gassed, chances are it is not especially good for either the health of the components or the listener, but a large quantity of activated carbon and/or charcoal would definitely grab onto that stuff.
Thanks! I look forward to learning of others' experiences and opinions concerning charcoal vs. activated carbon.
