Pros:
Self regulate their output voltage, usually can provide constant output voltage with input variations as wide as +/-20%.
Can provide maintain output power during one or two cycle dropouts
Provides input output isolation
Excellent RFI rejection
Excellent fast transient rejection (noise spikes)
Excellent high voltage surge suppression
Self current limiting, can withstand a dead short on its output for extended periods without burning outCons:
Noisy (audible noise) specially at lower loads, but newer controlled ferro resonant (CFR) designs are quieter
Standard FR Xformers usually provide quasi-square wave output voltage waveforms. CFR designs are usually pure sine output.
Standard FR quasi-sine outputs have a heavy harmonic content.As for how they "sound" you will have to wait for one of the golden ear crowd to comment.
