Ever play with the tension of the ends with tightening collets? The tension on the ends really makes an audible difference, and, IMHO, tighter tension makes the sound worse, giving a 'brittle' quality with an edgier presentation.
A 'loose' collet sounds better. I believe tightening the collets creates a stress riser in the base metal, typically brass or other copper based metals. Being softer metals, it doesn't take much tightening to induce a stress in the metalwork.
Mind you, I am not saying that it is bad to use the softer noble metals, just pointing out issues of using them. One aspect of using rhodium was that it is harder than gold or silver and can be plated with a smooth surface. That rigid surface means less galling.
On the other hand, look at the proliferation of contact enhancing fluids and the testimonials they receive. Essentially they are colloidal soultions of silver designed to 'fill in' gaps between mating surfaces.
