except i found that air dried maple sounds WAY better than kiln dried. I'm not exactly comparing apples-to-apples though...
i have 4 difft platforms: 2 are identical Timbernation 15" x 18" x 2" thick regular maple. 1 is a 3" thick tiger maple from TN also, but 12" x 15". The last one i bought, and last for a while, is the 4" thick brute from mapleshade. It is the real deal and is worth every penny...and it'll do what other platforms simply can't. In a perfect world all 4 would be air dried 4" Mapleshade maple.
HOWEVER, it all depends on what use you have in mind. Under a TT, go with the thickest air dried maple avail. Under other gear its OK to use the kiln dried stuff.
the complete answer to your question would take a long time to hash out, with lots of varying opinions.
other types of tonewood may be great too, i haven't experimented much. the 3/4" bamboo cutting board i have sounds terrible. the 2" thick maple butcher block sounds terrible.
Under my BPT ppc power strip is a 2" thick TN board & Isoblocks
Under my amp is the identical TN 2" board, but sits on the carpeted floor. Amp is coupled to board with Ult Triplepoints.
My TVC preamp sits on the 3" TN board, also coupled with Ult Triplepoints and Isoblocks.
My TT sits on the 4" air dried MS board (my baby) and is also coupled with Ult Triplepoints and isolated with isoblocks.
as you might have read, these tweaks are cumulative. My TT benefitted the most. 2nd is a tie between amp, preamp and power supply.
personally, i wouldn't spend $70 on a nice cutting board when a TN board costs $100... stay with flat grain boards, no end grain.
the current status of your system rally depends on how much you like what a suspended tonewood platform can do for you...
