A lot of manufacturers will use existing tooling and simply substitute higher quality material, in this case the metal parts. This eases the UL and CE requirements and saves on the re-certification costs. So I do not believe you have been cheated.
The Kimber Wattgates are a good example. The standard ones use the regular metal parts, but the high end models have specially plated and treated material. The plastic shells are the same, however, except for the stickers. You can actually buy the cheaper version as a Marinco standard item.
