Been there done that. I usually disable the speaker switching and jumper over directly to the new binding posts with better wire. You can remove the existing posts, and have adequate space for your new posts.
I normally simply buy a small piece of polycarbonate plastic (Lexan, Tuffax), about a 1/8 inch thickness (many plastics suppliers will have scrap bins, very cheap). Cut it to size and drill appropriate holes to do the conversion. You can even use the stock mounting holes. IIRC, but you'll need longer screws, of course. Since I use clear plastic you can leave the mounting plate outside the chassis and still read the factory screened writing.
