After experiencing this unit at T.H.E. SHOW, I would bet that it is shunting the ground from the gear, to the materials inside the "stethoscope". Removing a potential signal ground loop from circulating to the rest of the system is a good thing, presuming that is what is happening. Again, just my guess.
