It's called "engrish" and there is a website (humorous) devoted to it

Most Japanese (like most Americans) are largely monolingual. They try their best to incorporate the languages of other countries especially America into their websites and their advertising in Japan. Sometimes the results are less than perfect and sometimes humorous. It’s called “engrish” and there is a website devoted to it www.engrish.com.

I noticed the phenomenon in reverse in the USA. I have spotted individuals with shirts, hats, tattoos, etc. using Japanese characters that make little sense. The worse case I have seen was here in Santa Fe. A young man had tattooed presumably his name “Baca” on his shoulder. Baca in Japanese translates as “stupid”. :-)

I spend a month or two every in Japan and love everything about it including the strange translations. BTW, the Akihabara district in Tokyo is audiophile/tweaker heaven.

Hope you enjoy the engrish website.
