Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

A few weeks ago, I bought a Powervar power conditioner (3.0) to help my system sound better. It was to be used with my CDP. Well, like just about like every other component I own, I took a peek under the hood. Everything I've read on boards says Powervar makes a good product but one look inside confirms they don't really have audiophiles in mind. Low grade quick-disconnect & ring terminals, series-wired duplex outlets, power cord covered in PVC with a nickel-plated, molded plug.
So out went the stock power cord, the crap wire terminals and a rather generic looking Hospital grade duplex outlet.
In went a high grade copper wire PC terminated with a polished-brass blade plug, hardwired to the on/off switch.
In went crimped & soldered terminals on the torid output and the wires connecting that to the star-wired Hubbell Hospital grade outlet.
I plugged in my CD player, hit play and WHOA! Who turned up the BASS. Not bloated muddy bass, clean-strong powerful bass. Actually better than plugging the CDP directly into the wall. Who knew?
Now, what if I put some real audiophile parts in there?
