I suspect you would hear the effects of any additional elements.

This is a common problem. Your passive transformer volume control does not have enough attenuation for the gain of your power amps. Adding resistors in series with the CDP output would have audible effects on a revealing system and would likely reduce the dynamic performance. Using an additional step-down transformer, even a very good one, would also degrade the sound.

It might be possible to reduce the voltage gain of your power amps. Contact the designer to see if perhaps a simple resistor change would accomplish what you want.
