I've been using lead free solder for about 6 to 7 years now, initially for health reasons, but also for performance increases. The lead free solder does take a bit longer than the leaded stuff to break in, and I would estimate about 40 hours or so. Your prolonged break in period is probably due to some other component, possibly the capacitors.
The break in change is actually opposite to what you describe. I find the initial sound of the unleaded stuff to be a bit bright and then it subsides with great detail and frequency extension in the top end. Sometimes I have to remove bypass caps previously installed.
