If you are talking about line-level audio signals, then using 1/2-inch lengths of 16 ga. wire is a bit like connecting two lengths of garden hose with a 4-inch fire hose: No harm done, but waaaay overkill. If it's done and it works, no reason to undo it, but 18 or 20 ga. hookup wire would have been fine.
