finally figured out that it was my 2 philips cdp that were causing the distortion when i tried to use an in-wall autoformer vc at line-level a few years ago.ended up putting it between the amp and speakers as it was designed to do.
i loved what i heard but didnt like the idea of my amp always running at full gain so i took it out.
couldnt afford the nice sowters/s&b/silver rock/etc autoformer/xformer volume controls so did the best i could and got a nice smd dact.
been very happy and satisfied for a while until i got the bug for trying the autoformer vc again.
grabbed 1 out of the garage and wired it into the system at line-level and it sounded better than the dact.
the 12 steps of the autoformer vc were just too large in spl difference so i took another identical autoformer vc and cascaded the 2.
i think i have like 120? usable steps now.
great for latenight listening when the rest of the family is sleeping.
this $40 setup just blows my $185 dact smd vc out of the water.
so is anyone else cascading in-wall volume controls ?
i have to admit i got the idea from the sowter site where they sell a --3 step course-- adjustment vc to be cascaded to a --10 step fine-- adjustement vc.
