Steve Eddy is right. The only thing that I know of that can cause cracking open of the top of the caps is excessive current through the caps due to reversed polarity of the applied voltage or considerably higher applied voltage than the caps are rated for. The excessive current flow generates heat. You obviously think the caps in question are correctly connected but I would recheck the polarity of the connections.
