You shouldn't have any problems mounting them horizontally in a 2x2 configuration. I've seen it done many times before.A good tip is to wrap a plastic zip-tie around the midsection, for added support. If you don't want the outsides of the cans to touch each other, you could always put a small piece of foam in between.
