After reading your post and then doing a search for other posts about shunt attenuators, I decided to put a 10k resistor in series in my amp and use the Bottlehead switched series attenuator that is in there as the shunt element this morning. But the first position on the switch is way too loud in my system. I assume the next step is to increase the size of the series resistor.If you're not going to change the values on the Bottlehead series attenuator, yes.
Are there any disadvantages to a bigger resistor in this position?Yes. It makes for a higher worst case output impednace.
Any other suggestions?Yeah, just build yourself a nice ladder attenuator.
