Just for giggles, I put a Herbies Grungebuster 2.2 on a couple of CDs I was playing in my Esoteric X0-1. Now, the Esoteric has (IMHO) the best transport in the world in the VRDS-NEO, so, if anything, I was expecting a degradation in the sound. Color me amazed. With the 2.2 in place, the presentation became audibly more dynamic and detailed, with no discernible losses of any kind. What really confounded me, though, was that my reference Marigo mat didn't have the same effect. In fact, it spun and spun in the drawer until I took it out. This happened not once, but several times. The efficacy of Herbies products has been well documented here--I use several in my two systems--but this one REALLY surprised me. I thought the VRDS was so good as to be immune to disc stabilizers and the like, but I was seriously wrong. I was so impressed, I just ordered the new 2007 version of the GB.
