Uniform time response.

Given that placement and room treatments are correct, speakers differ in how coherent they are.

The ultimate stereo reproducer is the Beveridge Model 2, which is a monopole electrostat with a lens that makes it act as a line source. All the sound comes from one fast driver directly coupled to a tube amp, so the various frequencies arrive at your listening position all at the same time.

The Vandersteen speakers are built to give uniform time response from the separate drivers as an ensemble, but each driver has some inherent tonal qualities that call attention, especially on the gentle slopes of the response band edges. They can create stunning images, but the overall tonal response is not to my taste.

Simple box speakers with flat front panels can give good images if the driver shapes and frequency ranges result in beaming that reduces energy input to the box edges, which act as virtual sources due to diffraction. Do your speakers have a narrow sweet-spot?
