Initial impression of Memorex Black CD-R vs Mitsui MAM-A

All cd-r's treated with Mapleshade Mikro-Smooth followed by Optrix prior to burning.
All discs burned on CoolCopy CB 9168 in raw copy mode.

These techniques on their own yielded a copy with superior soundstage depth, less sibilance, and easier to discern detail than the original. I found TDK to be the best of the first batch which included sony and memorex regular.

Memorex Black cd-r's improved (for me)on the tdk's by reducing sibilance and creating a warmer, more coherent presentation. Air around the music, reverb, and spatiality improved. The music seemed to be more of a whole than before, while maintaining excellent instrumental separation. my wife thought the tdk sounded better. She later admitted she could hear no difference and was simply offering a response of any kind. i later divorced her for having stone ears. results are entirely subjective.

Mitsui MAM-A gold cd-r's lost some of the warmth and bloom of the memorex, but added more body and force behind instruments and vocals. In particular, instruments gained a more defined description of their 3 dimensions, perhaps as tiny sonic cues were more readily discernable. Loss of air but gain in discrete instrumental description.

It is entirely possible that the euphony brought by the memorex is both additive and subtractive, but i decided long ago that once a certain level of beleivability is reached, one must side with the option that sounds the most pleasing. To me, the musicality of the memorex black overshadows the gains in micro-cues by the mitsui, as i found detail already to be exemplary and with time will most likely forget the differences. Plus the memorex's are cheaper! Paid 19 for a column of 50, vs $42 shipped for 25 mitsui in jewel cases.

PS- re-burning is a hit-or-miss technique. I've had results that have run the gamut. 90% result in some improvement. Plus, i can beat up the copy without any remorse, as the "master" (tongue in cheek) remains pristine for later pressings.

Fun Fun Fun. Enjoy!!!
