multi-phase power

64.253.163.66

Any normal single phase (two-phase, really) power supply spends some time supplying the circuit from the filter caps, losing voltage all the while. That is, all supplies have hum and have variable impedance (lower when above average voltage, higher when discharging filter caps).

If run from a three-or-more phase supply, the supply could be designed so that the circuit was always being supplied from the line, with an inline regulator just varialby regulating the voltage down to the needed voltage. You'd still have Ls and Cs, but they would be there to remove crossover glithes mostly.

I think it would be a great idea to mod a good amp and preamp and be able to switch back and forth between single phase and multiphase power and hear differences (if any).

I talked to the guy who runs PS Audio one about making a synthesized three phase supply, but he wasn't interested. The only other options besides synthesis are to put your listening room in an industrial building (what's the WAF on THAT?) and having three-phase run to your house. I looked in to the latter option, and it was at least $50,000. I like audio, but that's way above my level of insanity.

So...thoughts? Experiences?
