That 100R resistor is attached to the screen grid and about 350VDC. What your doing by running the amp at it's limits is exceeding the screen's power dissipation. It then shorts and no more tube.
Any Class A amp will start to draw more current (ie go into class a/b) once it's operating point has been exceeded. This is clipping point in this amp. So it draws more and more current.
Dropping the screen voltage may help, but will also impact power and sound quality. The EH tubes don't seem to be up to the task your asking of them.
