By rolling off at an higher frequency, you attenuate low bass, which is both the most energetic in most music, and the most prone to saturate your output transformer.
So, nothing magical in having the medium and treble range better with less low bass.How to test whether I'm right (only halving the cap's value gave you that improvement) or wrong (some "audiomagical" characteristic in the cap you used).
Test several poly caps of 0.22uF (poly= polycarbonate, not polyester), and report us if you and other listeners could ear a difference...
