The putty is used simply to dampen vibrations of the connector and end of cord. It doesn't come into direct connect with the bare wires. As to it getting too hot to actually melt it, if that happens then I would think that you would have some type of short. I don't know what the putty itself is made of, so I wouldn't know if it is conductive or not. I've only had it in some connectors for a short while, so I don't know about long term effects. Perhaps someone with electrical and physics knowledge can help out in this respect. Based on my listening with and without the putty in the connector bodies, it sounds better to my ears with the putty. I would be interested in hearing what others who try this think as well.
