As for room size, I know there is a great deal published out there about golden room ratios and non-parallel walls, ETC. which all has it's merit/validations. Try this site that even has an "Optimum room dimensions calculator"

If you can afford to do it by all means do.Since I have never had the oportunity to build a room, I can only point you to the above mentioned literature. Just remember that even if you do build a custom room, you will still need absorbtion/reflective room acoustic devices to tame the acoustics of the room. For more on that, send me a PM.
