Shielding - why all the controversy and where are some FAQS?

Honestly, I've seen few issues with as much controversy on this board as shielding. I'm not referring to the way way out hype about magic chips here, just to a seemingly simple implementation of principles that our electrical science ought to have down pat by now.

Who can point me to some cogent answers for the non-engineer in plain English on such questions as:
1) which metal or other substances have what shielding properties to what degree
2) implementation of shielding on cables
3) implrementation of shielding on enclosures = Faraday cages and all variants that matter
4) "draining" of RFI
5) RFI vs. EMI shielding?

I fully realize that there are many more variables than the above, but how about some areas where there is general agreement....?
