Re: Receiver Upgrades/Solid state

If the resistors measure within value tolerance, replacing with another same-value seems pointless. You'll need to lift one lead of each ressitor to measure, lest circut returns mess with the result. Caps in the Radio-Frequency section usually form tuned circuts in conjunction with inductors or transformers; leave these alone lest you now require a frequency alignment of those individual tuned circuts (and at higher Radio Frequencies, ceramic caps are best anyway due to high-Q). Electrolitic-construction allows greater capacitance value in a relatively smaller physical package than other capacitor contstuction types (equals coompactness), thus you may not be able to shoe-horn fit another construction type anyway. Electrolitic construction uses an electro-cemical dialectric (just like a flashlight battery), so some may have aged-out & thus need replacement. Check for signal tracing with a small value capacitor held between thumb & forefinger, touch to the input Base connection of each transistor (three leads; base, emitter & collector) & listen for a hum from speakers or headphones. When no hum is heard, check that stage. A nail or other metal probe also held between fingers & inserted into input RCA jacks checks entire input to output of that channel = OK when hum is heard from speakers.
