HORNS RULE ! However this pre-supposes a GOOD 3-way system i.e. Bass horn, MR Horn & Tweeter Horn. Corner horns, such as the fabled Klipschorn, MUST be placed in a corner of very stout construction with at least 3 ft. of unobstructed wall at each opening with the horn sealed to the side walls since the walls of the room are used as an extension of the bass horn. I built a much modified version of the SpeakerLab Khorn using professional E-V horns and drivers and McCauley 6342-8 15" drivers for the bass horn and they'll take the paint off the walls. The finest reproduced music I've heard in my life. However, you must use very high quality drivers. Horn speakers require compression drivers to function properly. Using the Thiel-Small parameters of the driver the bass horn drivers should have an Fs/Qes (Fs = free air resoant frequency) divided by Qes (Qes = mechanical efficiency)quotient of at least 120. The McCauley drivers have an Fs/Qes = 200. Good horns are expensive but well worth their price. Cheap horns have, over time, given horn speakers a bad name in many quarters.
