is the 801A is the problem. That tube would be happy as a class A2 output tube with a B+ up around 600 volts. I can't see it as a preamp tube especially driving a transformer. But I confess to having never worked with it. I'd suggest a tube more like a 5687 or 12B4. Not as sexy but...A lot of those DHT's have a ton of miller capacitance to drive and a step up transformer will multiply that. I doubt the ability of many sources to handle that.Try bringing you post over to DIY tube forum. I think you would get better help. If you can post schematics.
