My immediate thoughts after the preamp had been on for three hours with the new set of valves in was how often we accept something performing under-par for a long while. All of a sudden the hiss was gone, as was the rushing noise in the right hand channel. So it's hard for me to evaluate the differences between brands! I can definitely hear deeper into the soundstage, but that's probably the absence of the noise that was veiling everything before.
Actually I suspect that the RTP3 is less sensitive by design to tube rolling than many other circuits, since the voltage amplifier stage is a cascode and the Super Linear Cathode Follower output stage has both a CCS on the cathode and a bootstrap on the anode of the CF to ensure constant voltage operation. And the phono stage is a hybrid cascode LTP, whose gain depends almost entirely on the passive components around it.
