In Reply to: Different 12AT7 tubes for Gain vs Driver in Audio Prism power amp? posted by Lyramax on February 11, 2024 at 08:47:01:
I had an AudioPrism Debut, and then had it upgraded to Mk. II status.
The gain and driver 12ATs do not have to be the same. That said, do try to have pairs, where the triodes match.
In 2000, I was using Telefunken ECC801S as drivers. They were expensive then, and unaffordable now. But the point is, they allowed the Debut II to become more sonically invisible. Once that happens, then you can optimize which EL-34s to use.
As for the two 12AT7s used for gain, the GE 6201 did give the amp a more "big car" vibe, especially when used with 6CA7 power tubes. If you like popular music, Mullard box plate 12AT7 (CV4024) wasn't as bloated, grainy, and uneven, as others. And again, if you get matched triodes, various Sylvania 12AT7s weren't bad.
