The 5814's should work just fine. Sounds like you got a bad tube if the originals work fine. Their are very few pieces of audio gear that are built with power supplies unable to cope with the difference in tube requirements for this application. In fact, I have never heard of a case.
Too bad you sent the tubes back already. It would have been interesting to swap them out individually to find the culprit tube.
