It might just be a matter of branding. GE gained ownership of the Owensboro KY Ken-Rad factory in 1945, but the branding continued with "Ken-Rad" markings until 1952. Maybe "GE" VT244 are being sold for less than "Ken-Rad"? I have seen "GE"-branded VT244 from as early as 1946, so maybe there could be a bargain to be had.
If you want to distinguish '40s from '50s 5U4G/VT244:
'40s Ken-Rad/GE 5U4G have transparent rectangular upper mica (view from the top)
'50s Ken-Rad/GE 5U4G have an opaque circular upper mica
