Why can't anyone make a decent VT-231 any more?

What is it about gaps in the "knowledge base" (human capital) and/or current production technology that can't produce 6SN7s that recreate the sound of the old Tung Sol, NU, KenRad, Sylvania, RCA, Raytheon, etc VT-231s? Why is this is so hard?
