I have about 60+ hours on a new pair of Shuguang 2A3C’s and today tried them against several other pairs of 2A3’s I have on hand. James Burgess 6W4GT/417A/45 /or 2A3 mono amps, Coincident Triumph Extreme monitor speakers. Here are my notes:Shuguang 2A3 – Lean and thin sounding, nothing special in bass, highs a bit weak, soundstage width and depth compressed. Single word – lean.
Shuguang 2A3C – Wow, these are excellent sounding, somewhat warm midrange, big bass and nicely extended highs. Wide and deep soundstage. Single word – musical.
RCA black plate 2A3 – Classic NOS sound, smooth yet very good inner detail, bass not big but well articulated, highs have good detail but lack sparkle. A little cooler sounding than the 2A3C’s. Good big soundstage. Single word - Refined.
Emission Labs 2A3-S – The best in my book, great round bass, rich yet detailed mids, rich and textured highs. Wide and deep soundstage with three dimensional imaging. Instruments and voices have warmth, shape, weight and timbre. Single word – Vibrant.
The Shuguang 2A3C’s are great sounding and a terrific bargain. The Emission Labs 2A3-S is still my favorite, but they cost more than four times as much as the Shuguang 2A3C's. How is that for a cool value!
