and listened all afternoon. I plan on rolling about every two weeks until I have tried all of the different tubes I have. They include Sino KT66, JJ KT77, Sovtek and Svetlana KT88, Ruby/China 6550ASTR, JJ E34BL, Ruby/China EL34BSTR, electro-harmonix EL34EH, e-h 6CA7EH, e-h 6V6EH and Ruby/China 6V6GTBC.
I loved the sound of the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ in my Quicksilver Minis. The midrange was especially pleasing and the low end was tight. The highs were good, not bright and seemingly "flat".
The Shuguang (reseller Ruby Tubes) KT88 matched quad was on sale at one of the dealers I use and so I ordered a set. Compared to my Sovtek and Svetlana KT88s, the Shuguangs seemed to have thinner glass and more "ringing" when tapped with my fingernail. Several of the pins were slightly bent, but not badly. The internal construction was not quite up to the quality of the S and S, but it is possible I got an older batch as this dealer does very low volumes. The other tubes I've ordered from them all had older style "graphics" on the glass and some also had old style boxes.
The Shuguangs were super quiet. I literally could not hear anything with my ear up to the speakers (Tannoy Eyris DC3). The low end was noticeably more extended and tighter than with the WXT+. The midrange was on par with the WXT+ but the highs were much more pronounced, but not unbearably bright.
The Mini Mites are the best sounding amps I have ever owned. The dynamics are unbelievable for 25 watt monoblocks. I swear they better my Krell KSA250 in their transient impact. God only knows why, but 100 joules of energy storage per channel and excellent transformers certainly helps.
Perhaps the Shuguang KT88's will need some break in time. At the price I paid, they are a bargain. I would have to rank the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ higher, however, using the Minis and playing the music I listen to.
