Whenever something goes out of production, some people want it more. Witness the current prices for the Shure V15VxMR.
Whether or not the tubes are worth it depends on the individual. I'd rather have a few sets of good current production tubes than a single set of NOS.
I have a quantity of Telefunken 12AX7 tubes purchased from an EEG equipment manufacturer. The company (Grass Instrument Co.) even selected them for low noise. They sound good, but to my ears they are no better than my other good new 12AX7s.
