But I do know that I like the basic Sovtek tubes for the very things that you are describing. They are warm with good tone, not sluggish and also very inexpensive. ( mine sound good with Electro Harmonix 12Ax7 driving them - what a bargain! )

I like the Sovtek EL84/6BQ5 alot more than the Ei tubes, but I haven't tried the JJs yet.
