The purpose of the getter is to, well, *get* any gasses that dissipate from very hot metals. As this occurs, the getter slowly dimenishes. As long as there is some getter remaining, it will perform it's purpose. Until it is all gone. The electron flow within a tube can only occur in a gas-free vacuum, thus the getter maintains this operating condition & that is why the tube still tests OK.
