Are we talking about a "cage" - a wire mesh box that might protect the tubes from abuse and such or are we talking about a tube "shield?" As a rule of thumb the "cage" would be more for output tubes while the shield is for signal tubes and is probably necessary to prevent the tube from being exposed to electrostatic/magnetic fields that would "induce" hum, noise, RFI and other interference into the piece of equipment. If the device in question locks in place with a "bayonet" type twist or a friction fit it's probably a shield and should be left in place.Rob
