Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Ah! Another job for Captain Sylvania

macdaddie,

You're in luck as the McIntosh MA2275 appears to be traditionally minded: four 12AX7A's in the preamplifier section, two 12AT7's and four KT88/6550 in the power amplifier section. It looks like an attracitve package- a 75W tube integrated.

I've never heard this one, but these days McIntosh does seem to be moving towards a more neutral sound.

We recently had a thread here from someone unhappy with what they felt was a too lean and solid state-like Rogue preamp:

and my suggestion was to look to the sources, and try to get the personality there if possible. My example was replacing the very clean and lean Revox B160 tuner with the very lush and deep McIntosh MR67 tube tuner with an Audio Research LS3/D130 combination. These neutral preamps just take on the character of whatever they get fed and with the MR67, the LS3/D130 sound like a really clean vintage tube system. Unfortunately, the Cambridge Audido 640C is simlutaneously revealed to be a bit dry,..

However, if you're set on the sources and still want more tubosity- nothing beats old Sylvanias. Find four Sylvania, black plate, square getter 12AX7As branded for organ use- like Baldwin or Conn, then a pair of Sylvania JHS (military issue) triple mica, black plate, square getter 12AT7WA's and the sound will be deep and lush with a soundstage to match. This will not be the end-all of resolution and detail, but actually not too bad. I think it will definitely get about as "tubey" as I could imagine it going. The good news is that these Sylvania tubes are among the more reasonably priced- everyone wants European 6201s and Bugle Boy 12AX7s. A couple of months ago I bought 6 NOS of the triple mica, black plate, sq getter 12AT7WA's for $25.

Still, I recommend a McIntosh, Scott, or Fisher tube tuner and a CD player with tube output stage, and put the old Sylvanias in those!

Cheers,

Bambi B
