Well, that sucks. If Western Electric ever gets their stuff together they are going to make a fortune. You would think that a well thought out production run of quality tubes would be profitable.Seriously, if somebody was to crunch the numbers and do a modest amount of research to anticipate demand for certain tube designs they could initiate limited production runs and own the audiophile market, if not the musicians market as well.
For example, let's say that a supply of 20,000 6CA7 tubes could satisfy market demand for 5 years. You could tool up and run production on that tube and change over to another tube and repeat. You wouldn't have to expand to the point of making 30 different tubes at the same time.
Obviously, I have no clue about the mechanics and economics of tube making. But, I would pay good money for high quality valves made in the USA.
There must be a huge investment required in tube manufacturing. If the only thing holding venture capital back is reluctance about the future popularity of valves then I think that is a missed opportunity. I expect tube designs to continue to flourish as the baby boomers age. Just look at the number of tube designs currently and compare that to just a few years ago. We haven't even scratched the surface of the potential. This concludeds my mini rant.
