600 ohms is a professional standard, and a pro preamp would be able to drive your amps satisfactorily, but most home audio equipement is designed for much higher impedances (often the LOWEST a home audio preamp is designed to drive is 10 kilohms), and would choke at driving such a low impedance, so bypassing the input transformer is the way to go.
