Re: 6CG7 RCA Clear Tops: Which is best?

Warren Wixen,

I was interested to buy recently the first tubes I've had that were from RCA Brazil- several EF94 or 6AU6- and amazingly enough these are NOS labelled Telefunken and in sealed Telefunken boxes- the $2 each was not too painful. I have a number of late RCA US 6AU6s and the Brazilian ones appear to me to be of a similar quality. I don't have any RCA, Canada to compare with US made.

I don;t have direct knowlsge of the relative 6CG7 quality but I would probably choose the US made first, the Canadian second or equal, and the Brazilian, which is bound to be the latest as last.

Are these the original model 6CG7s with the centre shield between the plates or the cleartop 6CG7/6FQ7 without the shield? The latter were appearntly made in Brazil and Mexico. I have several 6CG7/6FQ7 but am now concentrating only on the original 6CG7.

I don't think I've heard of a 6CG7 as a "regulator"- what preamp is it?

I've become interested in the 6CG7 lately as my 1985 Audio Research D115 amplifier uses 4 of them and I put off buying NOS spares until recently. Just an hour ago, I received a couple of TungSol grey plates to add to some RCA cleartops and a pile of odd ducks- NOS black plate, square getter centre shield Japanese 6CG7s- probably by Hitachi!

You may enjoy the many comments in the archives here concerning the 6CG7 and 6CG7/6FQ7s.

Cheers,

Bambi B
