In general, and they vary and are not always true, but here are some basic guidlines for naming. You are right, the first number equates to the heater voltage. The last number relates to the number of elements in the tube. The letters inbetween can be anything from a change in design causing the alpha to change to being the initials of the person creating the tube. This if for US tubes mainly. In Europe they have a different system like the GZ34 where each position has a direct translation. There are the tubes like the ECC82, ECC83, etc that are more sequntiual basis for naming.

Just make something up and impress your wife. More than likely she is just asking you something to appear interested and wants to make sure you know what you are doing. (If she is like my wife ;-) )
