Tube primer available?

Hello,
I own a pair of Quicksilver Mini Mite Monos. They came stock with Chinese tubes (two El-34s and one 12ax7 per side). One cool thing about these amps (in addition to how good they sound, of course) is that they'll take all kinds of other tubes, e.g., KT90, KT88, KT77, KT66, 6550 or 6L6, without having to bias the amps.

Eventually, at some point, I'm going to have to replace tubes; when this happens I'll have many options from which to choose.

I know that there are sonic differences between tubes depending on brand, age, where they're made, etc. I also know that even different brands of the same type of tube will sound different from each other.

Even so, I assume (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) that there are general, objective sonic qualities that differentiate, say an EL-34 from a 6L6.

Can anyone point me to a good resource that discusses the general sonic characteristics of different types of tubes? Thanks,

Jon
